Collector's Cabinet Exhibition! Art of Mourning Closing Party! The Scholarly Mysticism of A. E. White! This Week and Beyond at Morbid Anatomy

Happy Holidays! We have lots of exciting upcoming news and events to announce!

First off, we are delighted to announce that our current exhibition, The Art of Mourning, has been extended until Friday, January 16th and will be ushered out with, suitably, a mourning-themed costume party featuring a final tour of the exhibition by co-curators Evan Michelson (TV’s Oddities) and Joanna Ebenstein (Morbid Anatomy Museum Creative Director); music by DJ in residence Friese Undine; traditional mourning foods by Rachel Ridout and wax sealed traditional mourning biscuits by funeral director Amy Cunningham; ; mourning film clips curated by David Cory and Meg Moseley; as well as complimentary drinks and snacks. Many of the collectors will be on hand to answer your questions, the museum will be free and open for the duration, and guests are encouraged to come in their own take on mourning attire. You can find out more--and buy tickets--here.

We also also thrilled to announce our next exhibition, The Collector's Cabinet, the first of a series of exhibitions which will showcase extraordinary objects hidden in private collections, with labels for each object written by the collectors themselves. Artifacts will include Weimar erotica belonging to Mel Gordon, author of Voluptuous Panic; a pre-1800 wax memento mori figurine depicting a decaying corpse crawling with vermin from the collection of Evan Michelson (TV’s Oddities); an anthropomorphic taxidermy tableau once exhibited at Cress Funeral Home from the collection of Mike Zohn (TV’s Oddities); A pair of rare 19th century Rowland Ward zoomormphic candlesticks from an anonymous collection; early plastic lamp finials from the collection of artist Mark Dion; A copy of Physica Sacra from the collection of Morbid Anatomy CEO Tracy Hurly Martin; a Victorian scrap book filled with human hair from ephemera collector David Freund; and the title page to Frederik Ruysch’s Thesaurus Animalium Primus newly added to The Morbid Anatomy Museum permanent collection n (as seen above).

Other participating collectors will include Ryan Cohn of TV’s Oddities; “Collector of Death” Richard Harris, Daniel and Sommer Santoro of Black Gold, magic collector Rory Feldman, board member Jennifer Butkevitch, author Catherine Crawford, and more. The show will be on view from January 23 until March 29, 2015. Also, please save the date for an opening party to take place on Friday, January 23!

We also have scores of wonderful upcoming events, a full list of which follows. We very much hope very much to see you at one or more!

All museums rely on donations to survive, and ours is no exception. If you like what we do, please consider us in your end of year charitable giving! Tax deductible donations can be made via our fiscal sponsor Brooklyn Arts Council by clicking here.
