New Exhibition of the Sacred, Visionary and Vernacular! One Year Anniversary Party! Propaganda Goth Weekend! Upcoming Morbid Anatomy Events

We have many wonderful goings on to announce this week at Morbid Anatomy!

First, for three newly announced events: Hope very much to see you at a lecture and book party for Man-Eater: The Life and Legend of an American Cannibal with Harold Schechter (Monday, August 10th; Tickets and more here). And also hope to see you at a weekend dedicated to the history of Gothic culture. It will be begin with a lecture by board member Evan Michelson entitled You Can't Kill Me, I'm Already Dead in which she will trace the notion for the Gothic from the ecclesiastical architecture of the Middle Ages to male eyeliner. The next night, we'll be hosting a Propaganda Magazine Party with Fred Berger featuring an interview and Q and A with Mr Berger, the man behind Propaganda, the preeminent Goth magazine of the 80s. There will also be a special Propaganda photobooth,  special libations, a diary and poetry open mic, slideshow of your own gothic past, a dance party with DJ Andi Harriman, and much more! This week, we also have several terrific events; Tonight, come drink and draw with us at Morbidly Drawn Anatomy (Monday, July 13th; Tickets and more here); Tomorrow, learn about soldiers; souvenirs with the panel discussion Stolen Armor, Bullet Sculptures, Photos of the Dead: Soldiers' Souvenirs, or The Things They Carried (Home) featuring Joanna Scutts, Lauren Walsh and Susan Harlan (Tuesday July 14th, Tickets and more here).  

And, this Saturday, we VERY much hope to see you at one year birthday party, sponsored by Art in the Age and Brooklyn Brewery! The day will begin with a "Festival of Arcane Knowledge" featuring MC Evan Michelson of TV's Oddities introducing a full day of programming which will include an introduction by our board chair Tracy Hurley Martin along with short talks by Harold Schechter; Dr. Neal Goldsmith; and Douglas Rushkoff; a show and tell with an Egyptian mummy head by Mike Zohn of TV's Oddities; and a taxidermy demonstration by Amber Maykut. Following will be a Devil's Masquerade afterparty and costume contest with prizes, music and cocktails! Full line up and more information can be found here.  

Saturday's festivities will also serve as opening party for our newest exhibition "Opus Hypnagogia: Sacred Spaces of the Visionary and Vernacular," curated by Stephen Romano and featuring a blend of historical, "Outsider”, and Visionary art, along with contemporary works, vintage books, vernacular photography, folk sculpture, spirit photography, and many surprises. The show will include paintings by visionary artist Charles Dellschau (1830 - 1923); William Mortensen's 1926 photographic Pictorial Compendium of Witchcraft (bottom image); a rare copy of the occult grimoire Doktor Johannes Faust’s Magia Naturalis of 1849 (top image; pages will turned throughout the exhibition!); a selection of 19th century spirit photos; a relief depicting "Anima Sola," or souls in purgatory (second image down), and much, much more! The show will also include contemporary works by artists such as Kris Kuksi, El Gato Chimney.
