Can Reading Make You Sick? Electric Victorian Dilettanti Society! St Florian Pageant and Procession Lineup! Upcoming Morbid Anatomy Events

We have many wonderful upcoming events at the Morbid Anatomy Museum!

First up is our Gowanus Pageant and Procession in honor of Saint Florian, patron saint of flooding! The day will begin with a procession in which we carry an effigy of The Saint from The Morbid Anatomy Museum to the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club. There, guests will enjoy special $4 “Gowanus Canal Juice” cocktails and complementary shuffleboard, as well as a three-hour variety with talks, film and music loosely inspired by the Gowanus. Talks will include Forensic Pathologist Jay Stahl-Herz, MD on the post-mortem challenges of bodies found in water, Will Ellis (Abandoned NYC) on famous Gowanus abandoned space The Batcave, AMNH's Erin Chapman with “A Short Illustrated Bestiary of the Gowanus,” and Ksenya Malina on processional banners used by lay confraternities in Renaissance Italy. There will also be a meditation on proper patron saints for sideshow performers' and sword swallowing demonstration by Lady Aye; short films curated by our friends at Imagine Science Films; Jonah Patrick King's film "The Dowsers" about a New Age activist cult worshipping privatized water; special songs by Jessica Delfino and Kim Boekbinder; and much more! The event will take place on Sunday, August 16; you can find up more and see a full line up here.

Other exciting newly announced events include Death Café with Louise de Winter (Tuesday, August 11, more here); A new iteration of The Dilettanti Society Happy Hour with cocktails by Art in the Age, this one featuring Tim Mullen with artifacts related from his collection of "Victorian Electricity" (Thursday, August 13th; more here); Can Reading Make You Sick? - The Strange History of the Idea of Books as a Cause of Disease with Historian of Medicine Dr. James Kennaway (Saturday, September 5th, more here); You Can't Kill Me, I'm Already Dead: Notes from a Gothic Life with Evan Michelson of TV's Oddities (Friday, October 2nd, more here); "Mummy Cat," a picture book presentation and signing with illustrator Lisa Brown (Saturday, December 5th, more here); and a number of new taxidermy classes with Taxidermist in Residence Divya Anantharaman including Squirrel (Saturday, December 5th; more here); Fancy Pigeon (Sunday, December 6th; more here); Ermine (Saturday, January 9th; more here); Anthropomorphic Mouse One or Two Headed (Sunday, January 10th, more here); Fancy Rat (Saturday, February 27th, more here); and European Starling (Sunday, February 28th; more here).
